WHEN European Community leaders meet in Maastricht on December 9th to discuss political and monetary union, they will, no doubt, feel themselves actors in a weighty historical drama. But to the cheese makers of the tiny village of Camembert (population 185), the Maastricht meeting is just one more episode in a Euro-plot to ruin the product which has made them famous.
The European Commission in Brussels wants to introduce EC-wide food standards that are likely to include a ban on all non-pasteurised cheese on health grounds.
