May 6--Glenn Tilton is on the stump, trying to ensure that United Airlines receives a critical government loan guarantee that it was denied in late 2002.
That denial helped send the nation's second-largest air carrier into bankruptcy protection.
The $1.6 billion guarantee is crucial to United's plan to emerge from bankruptcy later this year, and Tilton is concerned enough about its chances that in recent days he has given his first interviews since last fall.
