When Jackie Robinson swung that bat 57 years ago for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York, he did more than step on the field and break the Major League color barrier--he changed America.
On that fateful day, April 15, 1947, Robinson's courageous act marked the beginning of a legacy when he opened doors for others by becoming the first African-American player in Major League Baseball. April 15 is now officially Jackie Robinson Day, and this inaugural year each ball park hosting a game paid its own unique tribute to the pioneer with video tributes, speeches and ceremonies.
