May 7--AUGUSTA, Maine -- Despite agreeing with a Cape Porpoise man's contention that new Volkswagen diesel cars have environmental benefits, the state Board of Environmental Protection Thursday denied his request to exempt the vehicles from a state emission standard.
In 1993, Maine adopted California's emission standards, which are stricter than federal air pollution rules. Because the 2004 VW cars failed to meet one of these pollution standards, they are not allowed to be sold in Maine, nor in Vermont, Massachusetts or New York, which also use the California ...
