The potential to stabilize home heating oil and diesel fuel offers many benefits to the supplier of fuels to the end user.
We are seeing, over the past few years, a change in the home heating oil as it comes from the refineries. It appears, based on ASTM stability tests, that today's fuels are more unstable than in previous years.
It would appear the fuels are more heavily "cracked" at the refinery. More heavily cracked fuel or heating oil means a product that will age and darken in color and will cause problems someplace in the system.
REFINERY CRACKING
