Aged almost 50, Erdogan was a mayor of Istanbul and member of Necmettin Erbakan's Islamist movement in the 1990s. He founded the AKP after Erbakan's movement was banned in 1998. He became prime minister in March 2003 after winning a seat in parliament and after he was cleared of a 1999 court conviction for inciding religious hatred (comparing minarets with bayonets). ...
