Wolfgang Bernhard's career at DaimlerChrysler was torpedoed last week, but it's not clear who fired the shots - Juergen Hubbert or Juergen Schrempp.
Some say Bernhard lost his chance to run Mercedes-Benz because of his bull-in-a-china-shop approach that angered Hubbert, the man he was about replace as head of Mercedes.
Others say the hard-charging 43-year-old was axed because he vigorously opposed the plan of Schrempp, his patron, to rescue Mitsubishi Motors.
Either way, the embattled Schrempp survived as DCX chief executive again, in a week that many expected him to be fired.
