In its original incarnation, Rafe Balufarb's excellent book The French Army, 1750-1820: Careers, Talent, Merit was a doctoral dissertation written at the University of Michigan under David Bien's direction. Bien is one of this country's outstanding authorities on the eighteenth-century French military, and Blaufarb's acknowledged debt to his mentor is obvious. The author's indebtedness, however, in no way diminishes the originality and value of this contribution.
