Ernest Hemingway's pursuit of a greater kudu dominated the mood of his African safari, as well as the theme of his book about the safari, Green Hills of Africa. This pursuit caused him great anguish, frustration, and ultimately jealousy his friend shot a kudu larger than his. But on page five, at the beginning of his story, he could have solved all of his kudu problems and lived happily ever after--if he'd only known. While waiting by a salt lick, Hemingway had a chance encounter with a lesser kudu and describes the incident.
