HOUSTON -- Exxon Mobil and TransCanada PipeLines are conducting field tests on the strongest linepipe yet manufactured at a TransCanada project in Northern Alberta.
The two companies recently installed 1 mile of X-120-grade, 36-inch diameter linepipe near Wabasca, Alberta, southwest of Fort McMurray. Exxon Mobil, along with Nippon Steel and Mitsui, developed the X-120 grade, which is 50% stronger than the type pipe used in today's high-pressure systems.
The test was the first under operating conditions in an Arctic environment. TransCanada used the section as part of a larger project to loop an existing pipeline segment to increase its capacity.
