Demand for organic products is substantial and growing in many U.S. farmers' markets, says USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS). Agency researchers recently surveyed 210 farmers' market managers, focusing on the role of farmers' markets as a marketing tool for organic growers and on consumer attitudes about organic products in those markets. They found that organic growers participated in more than 80 percent of the markets surveyed, and represented a little over 30 percent of regularly attending farmers during the 2002 season, highlighting the "disproportionately high" use of such markets as sales outlets by organic growers.
