It was a scene of almost palpably tense concentration at Orchestra Hall last weekend:
A producer and two recording engineers sat at a makeshift table in the rehearsal room. Occasionally, they eyed a TV monitor showing Osmo Vanska. In the hall about 30 feet away, he was leading the Minnesota Orchestra in the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 4.
The music stopped.
Looking at the score in front of him, Vanska said, "Strings, you have a lot to say there, but don't say it so loud."
