A MAJOR campaign by British bakers has forced a U-turn on plans to launch a GM wheat which would have changed 'our daily bread' forever.
The climbdown, announced yesterday by American biotech firm Monsanto, follows fierce pressure from UK bread makers, farmers and green lobby groups.
It will be seen by many as a hammer-blow to the future of GM farming.
Wheat was the next major crop set to be launched by the biotech industry in the U.S. and around the world.
However, Monsanto, which had backing for the crop from President Bush, has realised it would have no market.
