May 12--Polymet Mining Corp. has begun seeking state permits to develop a nonferrous mine at a 4,162-acre site south of Babbitt in Northeastern Minnesota.
An environmental assessment worksheet and wetlands replacement plans are being prepared, and permits are being sought for the mine, its air emissions and water discharges.
If developed, copper, nickel, cobalt, silver, gold and platinum group metals would be mined from an ore reserve estimated at 800 million tons, the largest undeveloped metal project in North America.
