WASHINGTON (FNS) -- General merchandise stores continued to clamp down on new hires in November, trimming their payrolls a seasonally adjusted 31,000 jobs against October, according to a Labor Department report released Friday.
The report covers department and variety stores with over 50 employees.
This was the fourth monthly decline in employment at general merchandise stores. Retail employment now stands at 2,292,000, which is 178,000 fewer workers than November 1990.
Employment levels in textile manufacturing, however, increased as back orders were continuing to be filled, said George Wino, economist for the American Textile Manufacturing ...
