May 13--PITTSFIELD, Maine -- As warm weather returns to Maine, winter-weary Mainers will be heading to their favorite ice cream stand, eager for a cooling treat.
But they may be in for a surprise this summer as prices for ice cream are expected to increase by up to 30 percent. That means a $1.50 ice cream dessert now will cost almost $2.
Wholesale prices for raw dairy products such as butterfat -- the key ingredient in full-flavored ice cream -- have soared to record levels amid a sharp decline in the nation's milk production.
