May 14--Despite a modest gain in revenue, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette owner Block Communications Inc. saw wider first-quarter losses than a year ago.
Toledo, Ohio-based BCI, which also operates the Toledo Blade, cable, broadcast and other communications businesses, said total revenue rose 4 percent to $104.5 million the first three months of the year, but that its net loss widened to $11 million from $4.2 million a year ago.
The loss in major part reflects BCI's investment of significant sums of capital in its Ohio cable system, resulting in large charges for depreciation.
