May 14--By the time the state Legislature adjourns Monday, volunteer fire departments across the area will know what their financial reality is: They will either receive state funds for the 2005 fiscal year or be left empty-handed.
What was once a $2.5 million pot divided among 900 departments was cut by more than 50 percent last year to just $1.2 million. Now, even those funds are questionable since the state General Fund -- which money to volunteer fire departments is allocated from -- still is being debated in conference committee this week.
