Six yellow spotted Amazon River turtles hatched at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in late April.
These turtles can be easily identified by yellow spots on each side of their dark brown heads. They are also part of a primitive group of turtles, which can bend their necks horizontally instead of vertically.
This species of turtle is normally found in northern South America, northern Brazil and the Guianas. As aquatic turtles, their native habitats include lakes, ponds, flood-plain pools, swamps and lagoons.
