COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. _ Former astronaut Michael Bloomfield won't be taking over as Air Force's next athletic director after all.
Bloomfield, 45, declined the position Friday, more than two months after agreeing to take over for retired Col. Randy Spetman.
The move, which academy director of communications Johnny Whitaker called a surprise, means Air Force will renew its search for an athletic director immediately.
Acting athletic director Brad DeAustin will continue to work in that capacity until an athletic director is named.
