BALTIMORE _ This time, the Hubble Space Telescope may be saved not by Story the Spacewalker, but by Robby the Robot.
The last time Hubble was on its deathbed, soon after its 1990 launch, astronaut Story Musgrave and six others eventually rescued it by fixing a near-fatal flaw in the telescope's vision. But astronauts are no longer allowed to save the prolific and popular Hubble.
Instead, robots could be able to change out Hubble's aging batteries and gyroscopes, early tests by NASA have shown. Robots could even install two new cutting-edge scientific instruments that would make the telescope even more powerful.
