ST. LOUIS _ Chris Carpenter was the best he`s been this year, and because of that so are the St. Louis Cardinals.
Carpenter and two relievers combined on a five-hit, 4-0 shutout of the Florida Marlins on Saturday, letting the 20-17 Redbirds climb three games above .500 for the first time this season.
"It`s real good if we build on it," manager Tony La Russa said after the Cards won for the fifth time in six games. "If this is the best week of the season, it`s not going to be too good."
