Attendees of the Professional School Photographers Association Annual Convention, held Feb. 9-11, 2004, in Las Vegas, Nev., received welcome news. After falling steadily since the mid-1990s, student purchase rates exhibited a modest increase during the fall 2003 season. The industry, however, still faces many challenges. The abundance of discount and department stores offering reasonably priced portrait studios is an alternative among many families to purchasing school pictures.
