When talking about Cuban music, usually the first thing that comes to mind is the Buena Vista Social Club, the Grammy Award-winning project that was one of Cuba's most successful musical collaborations of the 1990s.
Compay Segundo's Chan Chan has virtually become the soundtrack for all things Cuban, the way Joseito Fernandez's Guantanamera once was. There's also Cuban salsa--known here on the island as timba. More than 70% of the music played on Cuban radio stations is salsa; its proven popularity makes it a safe bet for local radio DJs.
But there's more to Cuban music than just timba and the Buena Vista crooners.
