A memorably cold January in the Northeast and Intermountain West contrasted with relatively mild conditions elsewhere, including the central and southern Plains and the lower Mississippi Valley. The Plains did not completely escape winter's grip, however, as the first and last weeks of the month featured brief periods of bitterly cold weather.
