Gay and lesbian couples waited patiently on the steps of Cambridge City Hall throughout the day yesterday for the doors of matrimony to open to them for the first time in the United States.
"We just never imagined this would be possible," said Marcia Hams, 56, of Cambridge, who staked out a spot at the front of the line before midnight on Saturday with her soon-to-be spouse Susan Shepherd, 52.
Twelve hours later, the realization that they would be the first same-sex couple to be allowed to legally apply for a marriage license in American history had Shepherd's head spinning. "It's pretty overwhelming," she said, burying ...
