History was made this morning when the nation's first-ever same-sex couple with an intention-to-wed certificate left Cambridge City Hall - step one to securing a marriage license.
"This is like winning the World Series and the Stanley Cup on the same day. We just really feel awesome," said Susan Shepherd, 52, as she and her partner, 56-year-old Marcia Hams, brandished their certificate for the crowd to see and cheer.
The couple, who met 27 years ago when they both worked at General Electric in Lynn, had staked out a spot at the front of the line before midnight on Saturday.
