WHEN his father retired 22 years ago, Barry Berger, 55, quit his job as a stock-broker and became the third generation to run Berger Specialty Co. Inc.'s downtown bead store since its founding in 1945. Berger has a son in high school and one in college, both pursuing different careers, so he doesn't know if it will be a four-generation business.
"Grandfather was a sales representative on the West Coast for Nelson Bead Co. in New York. He decided there was nothing like it on the West Coast, so he opened his own store. It grew steadily up through the mid-'80s.
