For 37 years. KB Alloys Inc. has operated an alloy manufacturing plant south of Wenatchee in Malaga. The company had annual sales of around $20 million in 2003, but $20 million is not what it used to be.

Ten years ago, $20 million meant quite a bit to the company--it still does, of course--but as costs have risen and worldwide competition has increased, the company's profit margins have narrowed.

Plant Manager Chuck Clugston said KB Alloys has retained market share, but the company is about more than just sales volume.

"You need the profit margin," he said.
