Q. For many years I had a lawn service fertilize my lawn, I am now retired and have the time to care for the lawn myself. The lawn service applied four or more treatments on my lawn annually. I would like to reduce the amount of chemicals I use on my lawn. Do I really need to fertilize my lawn a minimum of four times a year?

A. The answer to your question depends on the "quality" of lawn you want to establish. In addition to fertilizer application, the quality of your lawn depends on: turf use (heavy vs. minimal traffic); sunny vs. shady lawn; mowing, watering and cultivating practices.
