May 19--South Carolina employers added 16,000 jobs in April, the third-largest gain for that month in 10 years, and an encouraging sign that the state's job recovering is picking up steam, the S.C. Employment Security Commission reported Tuesday.
Restaurants and hotels hired 6,400 more workers, one of the largest gains among business categories.
The Columbia area gained 2,000 jobs, the largest increase among the state's metropolitan areas.
Yet, factories added only 200 jobs in April. So far this month, companies have announced layoffs that could cut ...
