Coated Paper Thrives in Europe

In the early 1980s, production of coated paper was just about equal between the U.S. and Western Europe. But after growing at a double-digit pace over the last eight years, coated paper production in Europe has surpassed that of the U.S. by nearly 50%.

Coated paper production in the European Community and the European Free Trade Association hit 10 million metric tons in 1990, easily eclipsing the seven million tons produced here. Since 1983, coated woodfree (free-sheet) capacity there doubled to 4.6 million metric tons and coated groundwood capacity grew by 80% to 5.5 million tons.
