In the early 1980s, production of coated paper was just about equal between the U.S. and Western Europe. But after growing at a double-digit pace over the last eight years, coated paper production in Europe has surpassed that of the U.S. by nearly 50%.
Coated paper production in the European Community and the European Free Trade Association hit 10 million metric tons in 1990, easily eclipsing the seven million tons produced here.
