If you keep track of accident reports issued by the Coast Guard, you know that a lot of boats go down because of flooding that starts in the lazarette and then works its way forward. Sometimes the problem is a deck plate that's not watertight. Other times it's water coming in around the rudderpost.
Not long ago an 80-foot scalloper went down after 5 feet of water was discovered in the lazarette. The Coast Guard said the guys on the boat never knew the water was there, and described the vessel as a "good boat with good people aboard"--all of who got off. Working bilge alarms, at least, would have warned of the accumulating water.
