This column is being written on St. Valentines day. Hopefully it still will be appropriate when it is published in May or June, which are big wedding months. We have learned that Cathy and Irving, from the comic mip, soon will be hearing the Wedding March from Wagner's Lohengrin. (The opera is about a medieval German Knight of the Grail, led by a swan to rescue Princess Elsa, whereupon he marries her. The story is about as good as that of St. Valentine himself, a martyred third century Roman priest, of whose least day, Feb. 14, the medieval poet Chaucer wrote, "every fowl cometh then to choose his mate," recognizing that this was when birds began to pair.)
