Now that Chips & Technologies has announced its 386-compatible microprocessors, PC users will soon have new alternatives in 386-based systems. Samples of Chips & Technologies' Super386 chips should be widely available by the time this column appears in print, with systems likely to appear by Spring COMDEX.
What is "super" about the Super386? It has three features that set it apart from either Intel or AMD 386 chips: 1) Higher-performance CPU pipeline design; 2) On-chip, 512-byte instruction cache; and 3) SuperState mode for power management and other functions.
