Flash memory, a much-hyped piece of techno-wizardry, is a hot topic in notebook, pen, and palmtop circles these days. These semiconductor devices are far more than a "flash in the pan," but don't expect this approach to set the world on fire anytime soon.
The key advantage of flash memory, a silicon cross between RAM and ROM memories incorporating elements of both technologies, is its ability to hold data with or without power. Like RAM, flash memory can be rewritten and reused, and it offers average access times in the 80- to 250-nanosecond range, about the same as dynamic RAM. Flash memory chips come in 128K, 256K, and 512K.
