In the Fall 2003 issue, Donald Westman states that the 1992 Daniel Day-Lewis version of The Last of the Mohicans is "Hollywood's third remake" of that well-known James Fenimore Cooper tale.
Actually, it's Hollywood's tenth remake--and that's not including Canadian, Mexican, West German, Italian, Spanish, East German, Romanian, French, British and Australian versions, nor a 1926 Charlie Chaplin parody. Admittedly, some of the more than two dozen versions are very short, several are silent, and a few are serials, TV series, or animated. Many are very obscure, with no known surviving copies. The Last of the Mohicans has been filmed twice again since Day-Lewis.
