Americans have traditionally viewed their revolution as a morality play: a struggle between good and evil. If the Patriots and the principles they fought for are good, British tyranny and anyone who opposed the rebellion must be bad. Anyone who initially supported the revolution and then rejected it must have been an irredeemable villain.
