Katerina Harvati, PhD, paleoanthropologist at New York University, and colleagues, have discovered evidence that suggests Neanderthals should be classified as a separate species from Homo sapiens. Currently, Neanderthals are classified as a subspecies of Homo sapiens, Homo sapiens neanderthalis.
According to Harvati's study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, there are two debated models of human evolution.
