County Air Ambulance bosses in the West Midlands have announced plans to expand the service so it can save more lives.
But upgrading aircraft at two of its bases and making a third one a fulltime operation will push up running costs, which already total pounds 2.4 million a year.
Since it was launched at Halfpenny Green, in Bobbington, Staffordshire, in May 1991, the service has been called out to nearly 17,000 emergencies and saved thousands of lives.
