China loses control of sulfur dioxide emissions
Shanghai. May 24. INTERFAX-CHINA - China, the largest coal consumer in the world, is losing control over its sulfur dioxide emissions, the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), the country's pollution watchdog, admitted recently.
According to SEPA, from 2000 to 2002, sulfur dioxide emissions were successfully reduced to 19.27 mln tons a year, down from 19.95 mln tons. However, during 2003, instead of decreasing still further, the emission volume climbed to 22.20 mln tons, 2.93 mln tons or 15.20% higher than 2002.
