May 25--HOLLYWOOD, Ala. -- The last nuclear power plant started in the United States was never finished, but it could be used to test the first of a new generation of atomic reactors.
Tennessee Valley Authority on Monday secured the first federal funds to help pay for the study of the next generation of nuclear power plants. The Department of Energy announced it will pay half of a $4.25 million study of a two-unit Advanced Boiling Water Reactor design that could be built on part of the 1,550-acre site here of the unfinished Bellefonte Nuclear Plant.
