Wacker-Chemie says it will build its previously announced silicones and fumed silica joint venture project with Dow Corning in China (CW, June 4, 2003, p. 8). The companies had also considered Malaysia and Singapore for the project. Wacker recently signed a preliminary contract to buy land at an undisclosed location in China, says Peter-Alexander Wacker, president and CEO. Sources say the site is near Shanghai, where Wacker already operates a technical center.
The new silicone monomer plant will be modeled on Dow Corning's siloxanes plant at Barry, U.K., which sources say has capacity for about 200,000 m.t./year. It will combine both partners' processes, says ...
