PANTING like fish out of water, burning thigh muscles protesting at every step, we trudged painfully over the last few steps of the path zigzagging up an outlying flank of the Dolomites.
On the green plateau ahead grazed two palomino ponies and a bay horse, the bells round their necks tinkling as we neared.
Our ascent was almost 3,500ft from our starting point - not much to an experienced climber but, as one of our party pointed out, about the height of Scafell Pike in the Lake District.
