In the words of Winnipeg Free Press columnist Francis Russell, "Canadians need a federal election before their political system crumbles under the combined weight of the (Tory) government's political illegitimacy and radical agenda."
We agree. A government with a 12 per cent approval rating, the lowest since Gallup began testing public opinion in 1942, should not be allowed to renegotiate a constitutional accord. Does anyone imagine that an equally detested left-wing government would be permitted to complete such a vitally important task? Does anyone doubt that the opposition parties, media and business would force it to resign?
