Spanish authorities, in accordance with Article 6 of Directive 92/43/EEC (known as the Habitats Directive), submitted a request for an opinion on January 3, 2002 to the European Commission on the project to build a new dam, called La Brena II, on the Guadiato river, near the Gualdalquivir river. The total storage capacity of the new dam will be 800 cubic hectometres and the objective of the project is to manage the flow of the river Guadalquivir in its middle section in order to reduce the shortage of water in the basin.
