The Florida Keys trail down from the continental landmass like a ragged tail on a fat kite. Which is an appropriate simile, given that a 35-mph nor'easter was stringing out lines of spume, even on the leeward side of those tenuous islands.
We, Mark Crew, Collette Lau and I, had actually intended to go to West End, Grand Bahama, for a couple of days, but given the 10-foot lumps in the middle of the Straits of Florida, we turned quickly to Plan B.
