Despite assurances that all children will attend schools close to home next year, a crop of bilingual students in the Elgin area may end up exactly where they have been for years: on the bus.
Students from at least 12 elementary schools in Elgin Area School District U-46, nearly 200 kids, will travel away from their neighborhoods to receive the help they need to learn English.
Unlike years past, however, there will be fewer of them.
The bus ride will be shorter.
And families will no longer farm kids to as many as five different schools for bilingual programs.
