Placement is key for lighters
NEW YORK - While cigarette lighters have profit margins comparable to or higher than most other items found at checkstands, industry sources say the products' association with smoking can work against their placement at the front end of chain drug stores.
Purchased steadily year-round, mostly on impulse, with margins ranging from 35% to 50% and annual turnover rate of six times, lighters are natural checkstand fixtures.
