Microsoft is merging its Caller ID for E-Mail scheme to curb spam with the Sender Policy Framework broached by Pobox.com CTO Meng Wong to spur the adoption of e-mail authentication.
The unified anti-spam spec is supposed to help eliminate domain spoofing and provide greater protection against phishing schemes.
Spoofing, which is e-mail purporting to be from someone it's not, is designed to trick filters. When combined with phishing, which tries to trick users into revealing credit card numbers or passwords by pretending to be from a legitimate source like the user's bank, spoofing can pose a serious security risk.
